Seeing the Bigger Picture: Connections Through Film
Through the recommendations of others over the past two years, I’ve finally started to watch both the Harry Potter and Marvel series. Now, before you judge me too harshly, let me clarify: I have watched a few Marvel movies over the years, and I caught a glimpse of Harry Potter when I was 7. But it wasn’t until recently that I really sat down to experience these series as a whole.
To be honest, I’m not much of a movie watcher, so I won’t deny that it wasn’t until around the third Harry Potter film that I actually started to appreciate the depth of the storyline. As for Marvel, in the beginning, I was mostly watching out of a deal I made with a friend— for every movie I watched, she’d agree to go on a hike or do some other outdoor activity with me.
But as I kept going, I started to see the bigger picture. The way each film, each character, and each plotline intertwined, revealing a deeper layer of storytelling. By the time I finished both series, I was left in awe of the way small, seemingly trivial details from earlier movies came to have major consequences later on. The writers had crafted a universe where everything—every word, every gesture, every choice—mattered. If you weren’t paying attention, it would be easy to miss the beauty of how everything connected.
Take the Harry Potter series, for instance. Remember the diary in Chamber of Secrets? At first, it seems like just a mysterious object that Tom Riddle used to frame Hagrid and reopen the Chamber of Secrets. But later, we discover that it was actually one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, a piece of his soul hidden to ensure his immortality. Something that seemed like a standalone plot device ends up being critical to the larger story of how Harry's battle with Voldemort throughout the series.
Or in the Marvel series, the Tesseract, introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers, initially seems like just another trigger for the plot. But as the story progresses, we learn it’s one of the Infinity Stones, tying directly into Thanos’ quest and the ultimate showdown in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Even minor moments, like Doctor Strange viewing millions of possible outcomes in Infinity War, set the stage for his pivotal role in ensuring victory in Endgame.
**If I'm losing you with fantasy movie talk, please hang in there.
Sure, each movie is enjoyable on its own, giving you a couple of hours of entertainment filled with explosions, fight scenes, and humor. That’s how I consumed them when I was younger. But when you sit down to truly watch them presently, to pay close attention, you start to realize just how much you miss if you’re not fully engaged. The beauty of subtle moments, the sarcasm, the love, and the humor—all those layers that make the experience so much richer.
This got me thinking about how life works, too. How many of the events in our lives seem trivial at the time? Maybe it's the daily habits we cultivate, the people we surround ourselves with, or even the significant moments we can't fully grasp in the moment—the breakup, the loss of a loved one, or a sudden change in our path. It’s easy to think of these events as isolated, disconnected occurrences, with no clear sense of why they’re happening. But in reality, it’s only when we take a step back—when we reflect—that we can see how everything is connected.
A life without reflection is like watching a series in fast-forward, only catching glimpses of individual moments but missing the full arc of the story. If we don’t take the time to reflect, we’re left seeing our lives as a series of isolated chapters: a problem here, a solution there, each one separate from the next. But the truth is, there’s a brilliant screenwriter behind our lives, orchestrating events in ways we often don’t recognize. If you pause, you can start to see how the threads of your life weave together. Sometimes they connect beautifully; other times, they lead to challenges we don’t understand yet.
For example, the breakup you never took time to heal from might be affecting your current relationship, whether you realize it or not. Or maybe the breakup you did take time to heal from is shaping the person you choose to be with now—leading you toward something better. Maybe the study habits you cultivated in high school are benefiting you now in med school. Or the sports your parents made you play as a child have grown into a lifelong appreciation for health and fitness—or perhaps an obsession with success and achievement.
Each of our stories is unique, but we all share something important: we carry pieces of our past into our present, shaping who we are today. Some of those pieces are beautiful—they are the threads that hold our lives together, the ones we cherish. Others, however, are fragments we might wish we could sever. But without reflection, without taking the time to look back, we’ll never fully understand how these threads are influencing us. We won’t see how they’re quietly guiding our choices, our relationships, and our futures.
So what’s the takeaway here? In much the same way that the small, seemingly insignificant moments in Harry Potter or Marvel later reveal themselves as pivotal pieces of the larger narrative, the events of our lives are similarly interconnected. We might not always understand their significance in the moment, but if we take the time to reflect, we begin to see the pattern. Every choice, every relationship, every challenge builds toward something greater.
The beauty of life lies not only in the moments of triumph or defeat, but in how we choose to reflect on them. Through reflection, we can better understand why things happened the way they did and what they can teach us. And just like in any great story, the more present we are in our own lives—the more we take the time to connect the dots—the more we will appreciate the intricate design of our personal narrative.
So, take a moment. Step back from the rush of daily life. Watch your own story unfold. Pay attention to the small details, the seemingly trivial moments. Because in the end, they might just hold the key to understanding how everything fits together.
