Expanding Your World: Finding Peace Beyond Pain
"The salt is your pain; the water is your world. If you expand your world, your pain will diminish."
This quote from Think Like a Monk captures a valuable lesson about perspective and its ability to address pain. In the story, a man overwhelmed by his troubles complains to a wise peer about how difficult his life is. The lady he speaks to takes the opportunity to educate him and quickly grabs a handful of salt to illustrate a powerful analogy. Initially, when the salt is added to a small cup of water, the bitterness is unbearable. However, when the same amount of salt is added to a vast lake, its impact is barely noticeable. This analogy beautifully illustrates a truth about our lives: even the smallest troubles loom large when our world is small and confined. However, by expanding our horizons, the significance of our problems diminishes against the vastness of life.
While this lesson is beautiful, it’s not one most of us are learning for the first time while reading this blog. It’s a lesson that requires constant reminders. Many of us can relate to the feeling of being consumed by our immediate challenges, especially in today’s fast-paced world. The pressures of daily life can easily shrink our world to the immediate people and events around us, making problems seem insurmountable.
If you follow me on Instagram and have paid attention to my recent posts, you’ve likely noticed that I’ve taken up hiking as a hobby in the past year. While I do simply enjoy exercising, there are deeper reasons for my love of being outside and exploring nature. There’s a reason why staying up late to look at the stars, reaching a mountaintop view, or looking out an airplane window brings a sense of peace and renewal. These moments remind us of the grandeur of life beyond our daily concerns. These experiences invite us to remember just how expansive and diverse the world truly is, reminding us that our troubles are just a fraction of the vastness life has to offer.
While hiking is a form of exploration that brings me peace and joy, we don’t have to hop in a car and drive for hours to the nearest trail in search of reminders that there is more to life than the challenges and pain we face daily. There is a practice that Buddhist monks perform during their daily walks where they take the same path every day but consciously notice a new detail each time. Even in familiar surroundings, consciously noticing new details—such as a blooming flower or an unfamiliar street—can awaken us to the richness and diversity around us. This practice doesn’t require grand journeys; it simply asks us to be present and curious about the world we inhabit.
Expanding our world isn’t just about geographical exploration; it’s about embracing new perspectives and experiences that challenge our assumptions and enrich our understanding. Whether it’s trying a new hobby, connecting with different people, or exploring new ideas, each encounter broadens our perspective and helps us see beyond our immediate challenges.
Navigating pain and hardship is an inevitable part of our lives. However, by expanding our world, we gain a broader perspective that allows us to place our difficulties within the larger context of life. We can cherish moments of joy alongside our struggles, recognizing that our capacity for peace and resilience transcends individual hardships.
Ultimately, expanding our world is a continuous invitation to grow, learn, and discover. It’s a reminder that while pain is real, it doesn’t define our entire existence. By embracing the vastness of life, we uncover our capacity for resilience, empathy, and gratitude, which empowers us to navigate life’s challenges with greater levels of grace and perspective.
GOOD VIBES ONLYYYY,
Kenzie <3
